The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the jaw joint located where the lower jaw (mandible) and part of the skull base (glenoid fossa) meet. The TMJ permits movement and function to the lower jaw and is made up of two bones separated by a cartilage disc (meniscus) and surrounded by ligaments and muscles. When the cartilage that cushions the two bones, slips in and out of place, the muscles and ligaments surrounding the joint can tighten up, resulting in chronic facial pain.
