TMJ treatment

What is TMJ

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the jaw joint located where the lower jaw (mandible) and part of the skull base (glenoid fossa) meet. The TMJ permits movement and function to the lower jaw and is made up of two bones separated by a cartilage disc (meniscus) and surrounded by ligaments and muscles. When the cartilage that cushions the two bones, slips in and out of place, the muscles and ligaments surrounding the joint can tighten up, resulting in chronic facial pain.

Dysfunction of the TMJ has been commonly known to cause:

  • Headaches;
  • Dizziness;
  • Joint pain;
  • Joint noise (clicking, cracking, crunching, grating and popping);
  • Restricted jaw movement;
  • Misaligned bite;
  • Possibly a tooth loss in highly developed stages of the dysfunction.

What causes TMJD

It is difficult to pinpoint the cause of TMJ dysfunction however, several factors may contribute to the disorder including:

  • Bruxism (teeth grinding);
  • Clenching;
  • Whiplash;
  • Direct trauma or injury;
  • Nail biting;
  • Holding items between the teeth;
  • Ligament laxity (loose joints)
  • Joint degeneration;
  • Inflammation due to rheumatoid arthritis.

How is TMJD treated

TMJD is treated according to the severity of the case and whether the dysfunction presents myofascial pain, internal joint disorder, or both.

TMJ treatments aim to help reduce overuse of the surrounding joint muscles to allow the cartilage disc to resume a normal position in the joint. The oral surgeon will determine the most suitable treatment for TMJ. This treatment ranges from anti-inflammatory medication to:

  • Muscle relaxants;
  • Mouthguards or night splints;
  • Physiotherapy;
  • Relaxation therapy for stress;
  • Jaw joint exercises;
  • and replacing missing teeth to balance the bite.
